Friday, 29 March 2013 13:59

The Arlington County CERT was notified today that it has received an Honorable Mention from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) -- via its Citizen Corps office -- in the agency's 2012 annual SuperStar Awards. The nomination was submitted by Jack Brown, Arlington's Director of Emergency Management, in recognition of work done in neighborhoods and backing up the county's compromised  9-1-1 system following the June 29, 2012 derecho. Of the 46 nominations submitted to VDEM, 11 were selected as Outstanding in their categories and all others received honorable mentions. In others words, everyone nominated was a winner! You can read all the nominations at www.vaemergency.gov under the tab for "news" and then "volunteer news". The awards are sponsored by VDEM in partnership with Virginia Citizen Corps, Dominion Virginia Power, Virginia 1st (a nonprofit) and Ready Virginia. Congrats to all throughout the Commonwealth who were recognized for their efforts during 2012!

NY/NJ CERTs Active Following Superstorm Sandy PDF Print E-mail

We respect and appriciate our fellow CERT members around the country. Below is an update from FEMA on New York & New Jersey CERT activities in the wake of Sandy:

Citizen Corps Volunteers Make a Difference in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Alongside interagency, state, local, and volunteer partners, FEMA and the emergency management team are working long hours each day to ensure the needs of communities affected by Sandy are identified and addressed.

While FEMA has provided more than $1.04 billion in assistance, as of December 6, 2012, to communities and individuals affected by the disaster, our whole community partners also remain committed to survivors.

The dedication of volunteers supporting the response and recovery has made a tremendous impact on our effectiveness.

“Federal response to disasters is only one part of the equation," said FEMA Administrator Fugate." Groups like Citizen Corps Councils and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programs provide front-line support to first responders and community members during disasters. FEMA is proud to work alongside our Citizen Corps partners. I extend a thank you and acknowledgement for all that they contribute.”

As the recovery continues, we will feature best practices and stories of triumph from our counterparts in the affected states. Key to the response in ravaged areas were New Jersey and New York volunteers.

New Jersey Citizen Corps Council helped coordinate volunteers across the state and sprung into action immediately. During the height of the storm, a communications repeater went down in the Hoboken Fire Department. Thinking quickly on their feet, the Hoboken CERT utilized its amateur radio repeaters as the primary means of communication for shelter operations, shuttle bus communications, and volunteer interactions.

CERT Classes 44 and 45 Complete Training PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, October 27, 2012, 19 members of CERT classes 44 and 45 completed their basic training ... 14 of whom have joined their neighborhood teams as active-duty CERTers. This brings the total to 575 individuals who've completed CERT training in Arlington County. The newest grads are from Lyon Park, Ashton Heights, Penrose, Fairlington, Shirlington, Douglas Park, Dominion Hills, Glen Carlyn, Westover Village, Columbia Heights West, Aurora Highlands, Crystal City, Radnor-Fort Myer Heights, and Accokeek, MD (individual works in Rosslyn). Many of our newest members were put to work straight away with the Hurricane Sandy deployment occuring only three days after their course completion.

The graduation of CERT classes 44 and 45 also represented the 10th anniversary of CERT in Arlington County. In recognition of this special occasion we constructed our own fire (look carefully in the photo) and ate cake. The fire was actually an eleventh-hour craft project when the fire department's simulator was not operational. Martha Stewart has nothing on Mike Egbert, Lyon Village CERT co-coordinator! Congratulations everyone and welcome to our newest members!
